Our June Story

MFRC
17 July 2026

June gave us so many reminders of what a thriving community looks like. It was a month of celebration and honouring diverse identities, experiences and histories that make our community special.
We supported men’s mental health and wellbeing, celebrated our seniors, recognized indigenous persons and refugees, and welcomed Scarborough Pride to our Malvern Farmers’ Market. Each experience reaffirmed one core belief that inclusion isn’t a one-day thing. It’s something we show up for, every single day, in the spaces we create and the relationships we nurture.

Supporting Men’s Mental Health and Healing

June was a chance to open up conversations about men’s emotional well-being and the importance of safe spaces where real talk about grief, loss, and mental health can happen without judgement. A new report from GreenShield in partnership with Mental Health Research Canada (MHRC), finds that one in three young Canadian men ages 16-29 view seeking help for mental health challenges as a sign of weakness.
Addressing the societal stigma associated with men’s mental health and helping men view mental health support as a positive experience are essential steps toward encouraging openness, reducing isolation and creating safer spaces for men to seek help without shame.
As part of Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to recognize Grief Witness for partnering with one of our Youth Outreach Workers to host a men’s grief support group at MFRC’s Youth Hub following a loss in our community. Men’s mental health continues to be heavily stigmatized, making safe spaces like these especially important. Together, they created a space where men could connect with one another, process their grief, and be reminded that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
In Canada, men die by suicide at approximately three times the rate of women, with the highest rates occurring among middle-aged men, according to the Government of Canada’s Suicide in Canada: Key Statistics. We see the importance of these conversations every day through our work, and we are grateful to partners like Grief Witness for helping create spaces where healing, openness, and connection can happen. Thank you to Grief Witness for your partnership and for supporting our community.

Celebrating Seniors and the Power of Connection

June marked Seniors Month, a heartfelt opportunity to celebrate the older adults who fill our community with wisdom, warmth, and unwavering strength.
At MFRC, we’re all about creating meaningful moments. Throughout the month, we welcomed seniors to connect, learn, and celebrate together. Our Seniors Spring Dinner & Dance was a true highlight, an evening bursting with delicious food, lively music, joyful dancing, and laughter echoing long after the last song ended.
We also brought our focus to wellness and safety, hosting workshops like the Fire & Falls Prevention Awareness session with Toronto Fire Services and ‘Strength Without Strain’ with Dr. Gupta’s Curious & Creative Lab. From home safety tips to finding balance and improving posture, these sessions offered seniors practical tools to help them live independently.
These moments truly matter. For many, simply gathering can help ease isolation, spark new friendships, and nurture well-being. Seniors Month reminded us just how important it is to honour those who have shaped our community and who continue to light the way for its future.
We believe every stage of life should be met with dignity, connection, and belonging.

Pride at the Malvern Urban Farmers’ Market

This June, Scarborough Pride made a joyful return- this time, bringing the celebration right to our Malvern Urban Farmers’ Market.
Our Pride Market was bursting with colour and community. The event brought together local 2SLGBTQ+ vendors, neighbours and community members for a drag performance and a screening of a documentary exploring queer ecology.
Having Pride at the farm felt truly special. Malvern Urban Farm has always been about care, good food, and coming together. Welcoming Pride into our space was a beautiful reminder of what we strive for at MFRC: a community that’s welcoming, inclusive, and a place where everyone can be their true selves.

Recognizing Indigenous History Month

National Indigenous History Month was a time for us to come together and honour the rich histories, cultures, and ongoing leadership of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.
At MFRC, this month is a gentle reminder for us to keep learning, listening, and reflecting on how we shape spaces grounded in respect, equity, and care. Recognizing Indigenous History Month isn’t just about honouring the past; it’s about understanding how history continues to shape lives today, and how we can all help build a more just, inclusive future.
We’re committed to moving forward with respect for Indigenous communities, histories and ways of knowing at the heart of everything we do.

Honouring World Refugee Day

On World Refugee Day, we took a moment to honour the courage and strength of those who have left their homes behind to start anew in a different community.
At MFRC, we know that settlement is about so much more than just finding services. It’s about discovering safety, building relationships, and truly feeling a sense of belonging. World Refugee Day is a powerful reminder that everyone deserves a welcoming space- one where they’re greeted with dignity, compassion, and care as they begin their next chapter.
Each of these moments had its own special meaning, but together, they add up to something at the heart of what we do at MFRC: belonging is built every day.
It is built when men have space to talk about grief.
It is built when seniors gather in friendship and joy.
It is built when diverse communities are celebrated openly and proudly.
It is built when we honour Indigenous histories and continue learning.
It is built when newcomers are welcomed with dignity and care.
June showed us that safe and inclusive spaces don’t just happen- they’re built with intention where everyone has the chance to connect, belong, and truly thrive.
